Cunningham still mum on political future

May 17, 2011

With Missouri Congressman Todd Akin (R) tossing his hat in the ring for next year’s U.S. Senate race, one of his potential successors is keeping mum about whether she’ll join the growing field vying to replace him.

Jane Cunningham (R, Chesterfield) currently represents part of St. Louis County in the Missouri Senate, and has made no secret of her interest in running for Congress.

She says, though, she hasn’t made up her mind yet.

“I’ve also got this opportunity of my (State) Senate seat, and I need to look at which place I feel like I can best contribute," Cunningham said.  "That’s a decision I’m still weighing."

Cunningham also says she’s held off any announcement about her plans out of courtesy for Akin, which may indicate she’s leaning toward a congressional run.

Two other Republicans so far have announced they’ll seek Akin’s congressional seat, and that field is expected to grow.

Akin, meanwhile, joins former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman (R) in the race to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill.
