Daytona 500 winner honored at Mo. Capitol

Jefferson City, Mo. – Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and legislative leaders welcomed 2010 Daytona 500 champion Jamie McMurray to the State Capitol today.

The Joplin native won NASCAR's biggest race of the year on February 14th, which was marred by delays caused by crumbling pavement.

McMurray drove a replica of the car he raced that day onto the south lawn of the State Capitol and was greeted by a crowd of about a hundred fans and politicians.

"To be able to win the Daytona 500 was certainly always a dream of mine, and to get to have just an incredible honor like this, I can't believe it...this is just one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me," McMurray said.

Governor Nixon proclaimed Thursday, February 26th, 2010, as "Jamie McMurray Day." McMurray was also saluted on the floors of the Missouri House and Senate.
