Durbin Criticizes Bush for Intelligence Lapses

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, ILL – Senator Dick Durbin says the president "should be held accountable" for American intelligence failures leading up to the Iraq war.

At a Springfield news conference Monday, he said says the public deserves to know why the administration was so wrong about whether Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Durbin calls this the country's biggest intelligence failure since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Democratic senator is a member of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee.

Durbin says he is not accusing President Bush of intentionally misleading people. But he says it's important to find out whether Bush accurately shared what he knew while building public support for invading Iraq.

Bush today said he will order an independent investigation into the issue.
