Durbin: Democrats to keep pushing payroll tax cut

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says Democrats will continue to push for votes on a payroll tax cut extension after it failed.

Senate Republicans on Thursday rejected a Democratic plan to pay for the $120 billion tax cut extension with an extra tax on income above $1 million. Durbin says Congress is "going to go back to this next week and the following week."

Durbin told reporters in Chicago on Friday that the surtax is the fairest way to pay for a tax cut that helps working families.

The tax cut will expire at the end of this year.

If Congress can't find a way to pay for it, Durbin says he would support the tax cut extension even if it adds to the national debt.
