Effort in IL would Change Waivers for Physical Ed.

By Ap/KWMU

Springfield, Ill. – There's a push by some Illinois lawmakers to revamp the way schools can get out of teaching physical education.

Right now schools can get unlimited five-year waivers from the state. The law that requires four years of P.E. and makes Ilinois the only state that requires daily P.E. for every student.

One measure in Springfield would limit schools to a single, two-year waiver.

Since 1995, 24% of the state's school districts have gotten P.E. waivers. Among the reasons are a lack of facilities for gym class or a lack of money for teachers.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich wants the state to stop granting the waivers.
