ESL Schools Oversight Panel Disbanded Early

By AP/KWMU

East St. Louis, ILL. – The East St. Louis School District will soon be on its own again.

The Illinois State Board of Education has dissolved oversight panel that's been monitoring the East St. Louis School District 189 for ten years. State Superintendent Robert Schiller made the surprise announcement Wednesday.

Schiller says the state eliminated the panel before its October expiration so it could instead help provide a transition team for the troubled district.

That transition team will be made up of Schiller and the superintendents of two other districts. It will hire by July First an interim chief executive officer, interim internal auditor and interim chief financial officer.

The oversight panel was created in 1994 to monitor the district's financial decisions for a minimum of three years but no more than ten years.
