Federal court denies Skillicorn a stay of execution

By AP/KWMU

Kansas City, MO – A federal judge has refused another attempt to postpone the execution of convicted murderer Dennis Skillicorn.

The 49-year-old Skillicorn had filed suit asking an independent board to evaluate his request for clemency, rather than Governor Jay Nixon. Skillicorn's lawyers argued that Nixon could not be fair because he is a former attorney general.

Skillicorn is scheduled to be executed May 20th for the 1994 murder of Excelsior Springs businessman Richard Drummond, who had stopped to help Skillicorn and two other men with a disabled car.

The Missouri Supreme Court has already rejected three other requests for a stay of execution.
