Former Clinic Workers Say They Tried to Warn of Abuse

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Two former workers at a suburban St. Louis center for the mentally disabled say they tried to tell their bosses of abuse by other workers.

But they add those in charge didn't want to hear about it.

Maria Compton says administrators wouldn't get angry at the alleged abusers, they'd get mad at her for trying to report the problems.

Investigators are looking into the state-run Bellefontaine Habilitation Center, after the death of George Holmes. He died earlier this month. His relatives were told Holmes suffered a heart attack and fell, but they say his body looked as though he'd been beaten.

William Crader, of Marble Hill, alleges his mildly retarded daughter was beaten so badly at the center that her eyes were swollen shut.
