St. Louis, Mo. – Former New York Times managing editor Gerald Boyd was in St. Louis Tuesday to speak about challenges facing journalists.
Boyd, a St. Louis native, resigned from the Times in June after a scandal involving reporter Jayson Blair, who plagiarized or fabricated a string of news stories.
Boyd says the Times' readers often called the newspaper to report inaccuracies something that did not initially happen with Blair's reports.
"And finally somebody did and as soon as somebody did, we stepped in right away and took steps. And so what I've done is try to understand why. And that's why I come back to this issue of leadership, accountability and credibility," Boyd said.
Boyd spent nearly two years as the Times managing editor. He's also a former White House correspondent for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
