Fuel Spill Closes I-270 in North County

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Crews are still working to clean up a large fuel spill along I-270 in north St. Louis County.

A tanker truck crashed between Lilac and Riverview Boulevard early this (Tuesday) morning.

Crews are working to remove the damaged tanker. They're also cleaning up the remaining fuel, which may be up to 2,000 gallons of ethanol.

"Ethanol is flammable, and if we get a spark or ignition source, we could have a fire," said Chief Bill Brandes, who commands the St. Louis County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team. "We're foaming that area to make sure that doesn't happen, and they're applying foam as needed. So that's where we're at right now."

People in about 15 nearby homes have been evacuated. Crews hope to have the highway cleared and people back in their homes later this morning.
