St. Louis – Governor Bob Holden and State Auditor Claire McCaskill are each criss-crossing Missouri in last-minute get-out-the vote efforts.
The two Democrats are neck and neck in the gubernatorial race.
The Holden camp is continuing to run attack ads.
They criticize McCaskill for taking campaign donations from her husband, a nursing home operator.
But the auditor says her opponent is getting desperate.
"I know that it's tough when you're at the end of a campaign and you're behind, but it's very disappointing that we'd resort to attacking other people's families, and I'm frankly surprised and kind of sad that that happened," McCaskill said.
Holden spokesman Caleb Weaver says McCaskill broke a promise to investigate nursing homes when she first ran for auditor.
"Those ads are about a promise Ms. McCaskill made in 1998," Weaver said. "She looked into the camera and promised to stop payments to any nursing home that allowed elderly abuse. The problem is, she didn't follow through on her promise."
If McCaskill wins, it would be the first time in a decade that a sitting Governor anywhere in the U.S. lost a primary.
The winner of Tuesday's contest will most likely face Republican Matt Blunt in November.
