Holden Nominates New City Election Commissioner

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Missouri Governor Bob Holden has nominated the founder of and president of the National Black Tourism Network to the St. Louis City Board of Election Commissioners.

The State Senate must still approve Angela da Silva's nod; she's being tapped to replace Democrat Audrey Jones, who resigned.

The board oversees municipal, state and federal elections in St. Louis.

The city's election practices and the board came under scrutiny after the November 2000 election. That's when a judge ordered local polls kept open after 7:00 p.m. in response to Democratic lawsuits charging that hundreds of voters were turned away.

An appeals court swiftly overruled the judge and closed the polls.
