Illinois Let Computers Go Unused for Three Years

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, Ill – Three years later, downstate Illinois high schools and colleges will finally receive computer equipment that cost the state $2.7 million.

Auditor General William Holland reported Tuesday that the equipment has been sitting idle in a private warehouse for at least three years. Storage and maintenance cost the state more than $340,000.

The equipment was left over from the Illinois Century Network program, a data network for state libraries, schools and museums.

Officials with the network say an inventory mix-up kept the equipment from being released.

They promised to review their inventory and distribute any other unused equipment.
