The Importance Of Media Literacy

Ongoing media coverage of Hurricane Sandy has highlighted the importance of media literacy.

Some news outlets incorrectly reported the New York Stock Exchange floor was flooded and numerous images have been doctored or a misrepresentation of current events.

Media literacy, according to the Center for Media Literacy, is:

A 21st century approach to education. It provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate, create and participate with messages in a variety of forms — from print to video to the Internet. Media literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a democracy.

Gateway Media Literacy Partners is holding its 6th Annual Media Literacy Week.

Host Don Marsh talks with some of the participants including Alton Grizzle, Programme Specialist in Communication and Information for UNESCO, Frank Gallagher, Executive Director of Cable in the Classroom, and Jessica Z. Brown, President and Founder of Gateway Media Literacy Partners.
