By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – A consumer fraud investigator for the Missouri attorney general's office and another man were killed in an apparent robbery attempt in the St. Louis suburb of Black Jack.

St. Louis County Police identified the dead Sunday as Tyrone Thompson, 47, and 18-year-old Jakeem Hicks.

Before going to work for the state, Thompson served as the police chief of Pagedale.

Police say Thompson was sitting in his vehicle late Saturday waiting to pick up a friend when two men tried to rob him and exchanged gunfire with the assailants.

Authorities are asking the public for tips.
