KC seeks to keep earnings tax measure off ballot

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. –

An attorney for Kansas City is urging a Missouri judge to keep a question on earnings taxes off the November statewide ballot.

The measure would require voters in St. Louis and Kansas City to approve their cities' earnings tax every five years. It would also bar other Missouri cities from imposing their own earnings tax.

Kansas City officials have filed suit over the measure in Cole County. The city's attorney, Galen Beaufort, argued Friday the question includes too many subjects and unconstitutionally amends Kansas City's charter.

Lawyers for the state and the group backing the proposal contend it focuses on a single subject - earnings taxes.

Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem will rule later.
