Washington – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill says problems at the nation's preeminent military cemetery are far worse than the Army claims.
Problems at Arlington National Cemetery came to light last month. They include mismarked grave sites and discarded headstones.
The Army says about 200 remains were misplaced, but McCaskill says there could be thousands more, because the military report only focused on one part of Arlington.
Despite spending more than $5 million on multiple computer contracts over seven years, the cemetery's records remain on paper.
McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, says this could turn into a textbook example of bad government contracting.
"The contracts that have been let, a number of them total millions and millions of dollars," McCaskill said. "So at the very essence you have waste, and there may be fraud no one knows at this point, but it goes on over a number of years and part of the problem here is that no one took line responsibility for overseeing Arlington."
McCaskill will chair a Senate hearing on matter this week.
