Missouri Chamber Music Festival Celebrates Schubert and Stravinsky

The Missouri Chamber Music Festival (MOCM) presents its third season of concerts in Webster Groves.  Directed bySt. Louis Symphony Principal Clarinetist Scott Andrews and pianist Nina Ferrigno, the festival offers three concerts performed by world-renowned musicians from around the country and St. Louis.

Highlights of this year’s festival include the world premiere of kiss to earth by composer-in-residence Amy Beth Karsten, a performance for two pianos of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Schubert’s Fantasia for Piano 4 Hands and Octet in F Major and Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale narrated by St. Louis Symphony Music Director David Robertson and accompanied by dancers from Missouri Ballet Theatre. "This is a great way for us to explore chamber music with David Robertson," said Ferrigno. "So having him in this role really brings forth that collaborative essence."

Andrews commented on the MOCM’s longevity.  “I think the key to our success is just the quality of the concerts that we try to put on.  We’ve seen a steady growth from year to year and this third year we have a big expansion and these extra collaborations now.  We’re collaborating with artists like David Robertson, and the Missouri Ballet Theatre which is a young dance company here in town. It started in 2009. Adam Sage is the artistic director there.  He has danced and choreographed all over the world and he decided to come and start a company here in St. Louis and we’re just very excited to be able to work with other young groups and kind of help expand the message of the performing arts here.”

Andrews and Ferrigno were Steve Potter’s guests on Cityscape to discuss this year’s festival.  The conversation concluded with Andrews’ “sneak preview” of the 2014 festival, “We’re working on some exciting, large string programs for next year which is going to be, I think, very lush and romantic.”
