Missouri Supreme Court Denies Request to Free Amrine

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Supreme Court has rejected a
request to immediately release former death row inmate Joseph Amrine.

In April the court overturned the Kansas City man's conviction and death sentence in the 1985 stabbing death of another prisoner.

Cole County prosecutor Bill Tackett filed an amended murder charge against Amrine. It resulted in his transfer from a state
prison to the county jail in Jefferson City.

Amrine's lawyers argued that he should be released, saying Tackett's amended charge doesn't comply with the Supreme Court
directive to either file a new charge or free Amrine.

This afternoon the state's highest court turned down the appeal without citing a reason.
