Columbia, Mo. – A new state law in Missouri requires drivers to turn on their headlights whenever they turn on their windshield wipers.
The law is designed to make cars more visible in the snow, rain or fog.
The Highway Patrol's Captain Chris Ricks says the goal for the next six months is to educate drivers, not hand out tickets.
"I'm sure officers will be handing out warnings and asking people to turn their headlights on and we'll be doing public service announcements and different type of things to let public know about the law and to get them to turn their headlights on," Ricks said.
Ricks says it will be up to the courts to determine a fine for driving without the headlights on.
As part of the same piece of legislation, the state can now suspend a driver's license for passing a stopped school bus.
