Jeffesron City, MO – The Missouri Senate's Budget Committee plans to make its first edits Tuesday to the revised state budget that passed the House last week.
On Monday, Senators got their first look at the plan; some questioned proposed job cuts as dangerous to the delivery of important services. Lawmakers are in their second week of a special session called by Governor Holden.
The Republican-led House passed a revised budget last week that adds some funding; it pays for the funding increases in part by cutting hundreds of state jobs.
Holden, a Democrat, called the special session after vetoing budget bills for education and human services. He wants lawmakers to restore cuts and ask voters to raise taxes on tobacco products, casinos and wealthy Missourians.
Last week, though, the Republican-led House refused to consider any tax increases.
