Lake St. Louis, MO – The U.S. Army has called a Missouri State Senator to active duty. Republican Jon Dolan of Lake St. Louis is headed to Cuba where he'll produce a military newspaper and radio show.
Dolan's Army National Guard unit reports for duty on August 8th and will be sent first to Fort Carson, Colo.
He'll be out of the state for at least six months, which will leave Republicans with one fewer vote during the September veto session. That could make it more difficult to override some of Governor Bob Holden's vetoes.
An override in the Senate requires 23 votes; Dolan's departure will leave just 19 GOP Senators in Jefferson City during September.
The bill allowing most adult Missourians to carry concealed guns was among those that Holden vetoed. It passed the Senate with the veto-proof 23 votes, including Dolan's. But one of the votes also came from Columbia Democrat Ken Jacob, who actually opposed the bill but voted for it as part of an unsuccessful procedural attempt.
