Jefferson City, MO – A settlement has been reached between the Secretary of State and two Democratic office-holders over provisional balloting in Missouri.
Both sides say today's agreement should help avoid delays at the polls on November fifth.
Cole County Circuit Judge Byron Kinder says there are no winners and no losers. The agreement allows the provisional voting rule to take effect at 5 pm tomorrow.
State Auditor Claire McCaskill and state Senator Maida Coleman sued Secretary of State Matt Blunt over the rule he devised.
They claimed the rule imposes more restrictions than allowed under a state law passed by lawmakers earlier this year.
Provisional voting lets a person whose eligibility is questioned vote anyway. But the ballot counts only if the eligibility is verified.
