Rain damages more homes in University City, new gym floor at SIUE

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – Several homes in University City were damaged by flash flooding from the latest round of storms.

Rain Wednesday caused flooding in the same neighborhood hit hard by flooding just eight months ago, in an area near the River Des Peres.

On one street, belongings floated in and out of garages and basements. Yards were under water. Several people moved things to upper floors and attics.

One homeowner said she had been through flash flooding four times in the past eight years.

Heavy rains also damaged the newly installed, $250,000 gym floor at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.

Officials at the university said the water poured through a roof that was being torn off and replaced.

University spokesman Greg Conroy said the extent of the damage won't be known until the floor is inspected.

The roof being repaired had been covered by plastic, but Conroy said that couldn't hold off storms as severe as the ones that hit the St. Louis area Sunday and Monday.

A spokeswoman for the contractor said the company is cooperating with the university.
