Philadelphia, PA – Nearly 2,000 people filled the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia Tuesday to see Justin Rigali officially become that city's new Archbishop.
Rigali left St. Louis this week after nine-and-a-half years. The pope named him a cardinal shortly before leaving St. Louis. He'll officially assume that post later this month.
Tradition ruled during Tuesday's ceremony marking Rigali's replacing Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, who was spiritual leader of the Philadelphia area's 1.5 million Roman Catholics for 15 years.
Rigali, 68, is the 12th man to hold preside over the nation's seventh-largest Catholic diocese.
The guests included cardinals from Baltimore, Rigali's native Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Vatican City.
Rigali's sister, who's a nun, and three brothers, one of whom is a Jesuit priest, also were on hand.
