St. Louis, MO – Missouri State Senator Sarah Steelman, of Rolla, will not run for Secretary of State after all.

Instead, the Republican plans to run for State Treasurer. That decision clears the way for House Speaker Catherine Hanaway to run for secretary of state without much opposition in the primary.

Current Secretary of State Matt Blunt is running for Governor. The current Treasurer, Nancy Farmer, will run for U.S. Senate.

GOP leaders spent months trying to convince either Steelman or Hanaway to leave the secretary of state's race. Steelman says she's opting for the treasurer campaign since her background is in economics.

Hanaway is from Warson Woods, in St. Louis County. She says her own likely campaign for secretary of state should be cheaper and easier with Steelman out.
