School Board Member Wants Ethics Investivation

By M. Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, Mo. – St. Louis School Board member Bill Haas wants the Missouri Ethics Commission to investigate four of his fellow board members who ran as a slate and were elected in April.

Haas alleges the St. Louis Education Coalition-a political action committee-violated campaign finance rules by coordinating spending between the candidates.

"The first step would be for the ethics commission to determine to what
extent campaign finance laws prohibiting coordination and control and cooperation between a PAC running a campaign on behalf of candidates and the candidates is prohibited," Haas said.

Haas was not specific on which rules may have been violated, citing only a 1996 campaign finance opinion by the Missouri Ethics Commission.

A spokesman for the Education Coalition says the allegations are off-base.
