St. Louis – A Kirkwood police officer who was killed during last year's shooting at city hall has received special recognition from the FBI.
Sergeant William Biggs graduated from the Bureau's highly selective National Academy in 2000. His picture is on a plaque unveiled Tuesday at the FBI's St. Louis office.
Jim Biggs said his brother's professionalism was evident even on that horrible February night.
"If it weren't for Bill's final action as a police officer, there would have been more lives lost," Jim Biggs said. "Bill was a great police officer, but he was an even better son, brother, husband and father."
The Academy includes law enforcement personnel from around the world, said Special Agent in Charge John Gillies.
"Number one in the selection of Sgt. Biggs was his leadership, not only to the police department, but also to the community," Gillies said.
Police Officer Tom Ballman was also killed. So were two council members and Kirkwood's public works director. Mayor Mike Swoboda died of his injuries seven months later.
