Slay Highlights Education, Emergency Workers at DNC

(UPI)

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay says a Kerry presidency will be good for public education.

Slay addressed the Democratic National Convention Thursday.

He said the private firm that ran the St. Louis Public Schools for the last year helped focus more resources on the classroom.

"Yet children will continue to be left behind if the federal government fails to meet its obligations," Slay said. "John Kerry and John Edwards will not rest until every child has a chance for a good education."

Slay also said the federal government needs to help first responders better prepare for a national emergency.

He added that cities cannot be overly dependent on Washington. But city residents should get a return on their tax dollars.
