St. Louis-Area Housing Discrimination Complaints Rise

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Housing discrimination complaints are continuing to rise in the St. Louis area.

That's according to a report the nonprofit Metropolitan St. Louis Equal Housing Opportunity Commission released Monday.

Commission Director Will Jordan says part of the reason for the jump may be that more people know their rights.

"We definitely believe that the visibility of the agency has increased in the last two years," Jordan said. "And because of that, people are realizing that there is a place to call to deal with these issues."

Last year the agency received 98 complaints. That's the most in its 12-year history.

Nearly half of those concerned racial discrimination. Complaints from families with children and those with disabilities also went up.
