St. Louis film critics reveal their top picks of 2010

Film critics in St. Louis are getting a jump on the foreign journalists that decide the Golden Globe award winners. While the nominees for 2010 Globes will be announced tomorrow, the St. Louis Film Critics have announced their list today.

The St. Louis nominees for Best Picture are:

  • Black Swan
  • The Fighter
  • Inception
  • The King's Speech
  • The Social Network

Best Actor nominees are:

  • Javier Bardem (Biutiful)
  • Jeff Bridges (True Grit)
  • Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network)
  • Colin Firth (The King's Speech)
  • James Franco (127 Hours).

Those named for Best Actress are:

  • Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
  • Naomi Watts (Fair Game)
  • Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone)
  • Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole)
  • Noomi Rapace (The Girl Who Played with Fire)

A couple of local notes -- Winter's Bone, a small independant movie, was filmed in Missouri. And Colin Firth spent part of his childhood in St. Louis!

Interestingly, the local critics also include a "Special Merit" category that identifies a film's best scene, cinematic technique or "other memorable aspect or moment." Among the nominees for this particular award is the zoom-up scene in "127 Hours" which begins with a tight shot on Aron (James Franco) as he is screaming and pulls out to a wide shot of a large land area, showing how isolated he was from other humans.

The St. Louis Film Critics will announce their winners next Monday on their website.
