St. Louis Zoo Losing Four Gorillas

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Zoo will soon become a bit of a gorilla bachelor pad next week.

Officials say they don't have enough room to keep all seven of the zoo's gorillas. So four of them are headed to Philadelphia's zoo.

That will leave three male gorillas, which zoo curators say gives them a chance to devote resources and attention to a neglected part of the gorilla population.

Most zoos prefer families, which are crowd favorites. But gorillas don't usually live in the kinds of families humans consider normal. With gorillas, one male many times oversees several females within a family.

That leaves an excess of unattached males, who live on the fringes of gorilla society.
