St. Louis – Three people, including a state lawmaker, were arrested Sunday after an emergency meeting of a troubled suburban St. Louis fire department.
The Post Dispatch reports that the board of the Northeast Ambulance and Fire Protection District voted to pay its attorneys and fire chief severance packages totaling more than $780,000.
Beverly Hills police charged Democratic State Representative Don Calloway Junior with second degree robbery after he grabbed a checkbook to find out which bank the payments were to come from.
Last week, Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee released a review of the Northeast fire district.
It found illegal budgets, no-bid contracts, excessive payments and unnecessary spending.
Montee also said the district board illegally used employees and equipment to campaign for a bond issue.
