St. Louis – Update: As of 3:10 pm, all lanes of Interstate 270 across the Chain of Rocks bridge were cleared.
Update: As of 1:30 pm, all lanes of westbound 270 across the Chain of Rocks bridge are open. Eastbound lanes remain closed.
Update: As of 10:45 am, one lane of traffic on westbound Interstate 270 across the Chain of Rocks bridge was open. The eastbound lanes remain closed.
A man trying to push his disabled car off the Chain of Rocks bridge was killed Wednesday when a tractor trailer could not avoid hitting him.
The tractor trailer struck the man around 5 am on the bridge, which carries Interstate 270 across the Mississippi River near the northern city-county border. The St. Louis police department said the truck driver attempted to swerve, but hit a median and caught on fire.
St. Louis police are investigating the accident. The highway remains closed and Missouri Department of Transportation officials say the highway may not re-open until late morning.
