St. Louis, MO – Identical twins are recovering at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield after surgeons Wednesday transplanted one twin's ovary to the other twin.

Dr. Sherman Silber says it's the first time such a transplant has ever been tried in the country. But several organ-donor and reproductive groups were unable to confirm his claim.

The 24-year old sisters are from Alabama. Both entered puberty normally but Stephanie Yarber began menopause at age 13 while her sister, Melanie Morgan, stayed fertile.

Silber expects the transplanted ovary should start producing eggs in normal cycles in about three months.
