St. Louis – A St. Louis police officer remains in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop Wednesday night.
The incident happened near the intersection of Delmar and Kingshighway around 10:15 pm Wednesday. The two officers pulled over a car in the 4800 block of Enright that was driving without its lights. A male who stepped out of the car for a pat-down pulled a gun from his waistband and struck one officer, a 25-year-old with two years on the force, in the neck and the elbow.
The suspect, 20-year-old Kim Dwayne Cobb, then fled, still firing bullets. A second officer returned fire, striking Cobb, who continued to run. Bell was later arrested about a block from the shooting when occupants of a second car flagged down an ambulance and told paramedics they had a gunshot victim in the car.
The first officer underwent surgery to repair an artery in his neck; he remains in critical condition. The second officer, 27 and a two and a half-year veteran of the force, was grazed by a bullet in the leg, but treated and released.
Cobb has been charged with two counts of first degree assault on a law enforcement official and two counts of armed criminal action. He's being held on $500,000 cash bond.
