IRS Systematically Targeted 'Progressive' Groups Too

The scandal at the Internal Revenue Service is becoming more of a muddle. We're learning more this morning about which groups were targeted for extra scrutiny. Turns out both conservative groups and progressive groups were on the so-called Be on the Lookout List at the IRS. Meanwhile, the man currently leading the agency says an internal investigation has found no evidence of intentional wrong doing.

McCaskill: IRS Officials Should Be Fired For Targeting Conservative Groups

Last week, the IRS apologized for targeting conservative groups in audits for tax exempt status. In response, Senator Claire McCaskill, a Democrat from Missouri, is calling for high-ranking officials to be fired.   

501(c)(4)s are tax exempt organizations that are supposed to be “social welfare” groups. But in reality, many are Political Action Committees that do not have to disclose donors. A couple of prominent examples are Americans For Prosperity and Crossroads GPS on the conservative end, and Priorities USA on the liberal side.

Uncertainty plagues end-of-year tax planning

The Senate voted this afternoon to move ahead with Obama's compromise tax cut package.  A final Senate vote is expected Tuesday. But the bill still faces an uncertain future in the House.
