Drought takes toll on river transport cities

There's more sun and heat in the forecast for St. Louis. Not great for a region that's in the midst of the worst drought in decades. Now, we've heard about the effect the drought is having on on farmers -- but it turns out it's also shrinking the shipping lanes in the Mississippi River. Our own Adam Allington reports for Marketplace Morning Report this morning. See more via the link.
Because of the drought, there is only one shipping lane on the Mississippi. So the barges on the river have to coordinate in a way they've never had to.

Missouri's low cigarette tax under fire

The state with the lowest tax on cigarettes? No, not tobacco country -- Virginia or North Carolina. It's Missouri, with a tax of just 17 cents a pack. The national average is a buck and a half. But health advocates are pushing a ballot initiative to increase the levy in Missouri.
