Water Surcharge Bill Fails In Missouri Senate

The Missouri Senate has rejected a bill that would have allowed additional water and sewer companies to seek permission for surcharges to build new infrastructure.


Currently, only water companies in St. Louis County can impose such a surcharge between formal rate cases. Other water companies must get approval for a rate increase from the state Public Service Commission.

Rates rising for customers of Missouri American

State regulators have approved a $24 million rate increase for water and sewer customers of Missouri American Water Co. - that's half of the rate increase the company sought with the Missouri Public Service Commission last summer.

The increase endorsed Wednesday is to take effect April 1 for many of the company's nearly 458,000 customers, but the exact amount will vary by community. Missouri American serves the St. Louis area, Jefferson City, Joplin, St. Joseph, Warrensburg, Mexico and other communities.

Boil order for South County lifted

A boil order is in effect for abou 8,000 Missouri American Water customers in south St. Louis until further notice because of a water main break.

Updated at 2:05 p.m. July 3:

As of 1:30 p.m., the boil order that had been in effect for 8,000 Missouri American Water customers in south St. Louis County was lifted. The utility is recommending that customers in the affected area flush their plumbing by letting faucets run for a few minutes.

The affected ZIP codes were:

  • St. Louis County portions of 63026
  • St. Louis County portions of 63049
  • Portions of 63088 that are south of the Meramec River.
