St. Louis Parking Meters To Accept Credit Cards, Smartphone Payments

Beginning this fall, there will be more options for paying parking meters in the city of St. Louis, including credit cards and smartphones.

The St. Louis treasurer’s office has selected a joint bid from Xerox and Parkmobile to update the payment system. Xerox will supply new meters that accept credit cards as well as cash, and Parkmobile will launch an app that allows customers to pay the meter using their smartphones.

City treasurer candidate sues incumbent over no-bid contracts

Ald. Fred Wessels, a candidate for city treasurer, has sued incumbent Larry Williams over an allegedly illegal contract to manage parking meters in St. Louis.

Calling him a "rogue public official who needs to be reined in by the courts," south St. Louis city alderman Fred Wessels has filed suit against treasurer Larry Williams, accusing him of illegally implementing a contract to manage the city's 10,000 parking meters.

Illinois' treasurer invests the state's money. The Comptroller pays the bills. A measure approved by the Senate today would merge the two constitutional offices.

Supporters say it makes "sense" - literally and metaphorically. According to projections, the consolidation would result in a savings of $12 million.

Missouri residents are being urged to find out if they have any unclaimed property being held by the state. Treasurer Clint Zweifel says his office currently holds around $600 million in unclaimed cash and merchandise. The items include World's Fair tickets, bank notes from the early 1800's, and unclaimed war medals.

Illinois legislators propose combining state Comptroller, Treasurer offices

Illinois legislators are preparing to debate a plan that would combine two elected offices into one.

The proposal would change the state Constitution, combining the Treasurer's office and the Comptroller's office. Both deal with the finances of Illinois, the treasurer with investments and the comptroller is in charge of dispersing the state's money.
