McCaskill wants Sat. vote on Arlington legislation
Missouri Democrat Claire McCaskill says the Sente needs to vote - and soon - on her measure that would increase oversight at Arlington National Cemetery.
Back in July, McCaskill chaired a hearing where it was revealed that as many as 6,600 graves could be mislabeled or unmarked. Then today, the Army announced that it had launched its first criminal investigation after eight urns were discovered in one grave.
That news, McCaskill said, makes action all the more urgent.
"If we do not provide adequate oversight right now, when will we? Is there a subject more important than making sure that those we should honor the most are in fact being treated with the kind of dignity and respect they deserve, rather than just being thrown in a gravesite that says 'unknown'?"
The legislation would change the organizational structure at Arlington and make management there more accountable to Congress. It's currently sitting in the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
