St. Louis Public Radio podcast host Lauren Brown has been awarded a winner of the 2020 National Awards for Education Reporting presented byThe Education Writers Association (EWA) for her work on Black at Mizzou: Confronting Race On Campus, produced by American Public Media Reports team members Brown, Alex Baumhardt, Chris Julin, Sabby Robinson, and Catherine Winter.

The EWA grants awards annually for compelling and groundbreaking journalism covering education. Entries for this award were independently judged by current and former professional journalists who have described Black at Mizzou as, “moving, disturbing... a daring nontraditional approach that gives deep insights into the experience of Black students on college campuses.”

Brown wanted this documentary to be different from other Mizzou stories. “I wanted to show the reality we face,” she said. “I value the people I learned from and what they went through and I wanted to show the trials but also the triumphs and the love that we have for one another!”

Brown is also co-host of the award-winning podcast We Live Here from St. Louis Public Radio and PRX. We Live Here shares stories about race and class in the St. Louis community.

In a special bonus episode of We Live Here, called Making of Black at Mizzou, Brown shared what it was like to host and produce the Black at Mizzou documentary, including her personal experience as a Black journalism student.
