St. Louis Storytelling Festival Offers Programs For All Ages

For the 34th year, the University of Missouri – St. Louis School of Professional and Continuing Studies presents a four-day festival highlighting the art of storytelling.  From May 1 – 4, six featured storytellers from across the nation join fifty storytellers from the St. Louis region to present more than one hundred events  in a host of locations including the Gateway Arch, the Missouri History Museum and numerous libraries, parks and bookstores in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. There are programs geared to people of all ages.  In addition to storytelling performances, the festival includes workshops and classes.

Among the storytellers are those who specialize in African and Native American stories as well as those from the deaf community who perform with interpretation for the hearing.  Likewise, some events are interpreted for the hearing impaired.

The festival culminates on the evening of Saturday, May 4 with the Grand Finale Concert at The Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri – St. Louis campus.  All six featured storytellers will perform in that concert.

Storyteller and Festival Assistant Director Sue Hinkel was Steve Potter's guest on Cityscape to talk about the art of storytelling, the festival, storytelling classes and to share two of her own stories. Complete information about all the events is available on the Storytelling Festival website.
