Without Ever Leaving the Ground (She Flew): Live Dance Performance
She Flew is a performance project within the Dreams of Flight series created by movement artist and dance educator Nia-Amina Minor. Performed by Akoiya Harris, Michele Dooley, and Nia-Amina Minor, She Flew explores the internal landscape of collective dreams of flight. From the historic presence of flight in spiritual and gospel music, to the movement of Black people during the Great Migration, the piece is influenced by the ancestral embodiment of flight within the Black community. A projected recording of one rendition of She Flew is currently on view at The Luminary as part of the in c/o exhibition. Over two performances throughout the first weekend in November, Minor's composition will be brought to life in The Luminary's gallery space on Cherokee Street. Three figures adorned in and surrounded by clouds will interact with the works on view, activating the artworks as more than simply aesthetic objects removed from lived human experience. Through dance, they will be transformed into generative sites of collectivity and authentic interaction. Flight will become a site of possibility, a secret language, and a paradox as we consider those who can fly without ever leaving the ground.
