Army Corps Wants to Move Uranium-Contaminated Soil

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to remove uranium-contaminated soil from sites in St. Louis and ship it for disposal in the West.

The plan calls for removing about 230,000 cubic yards of soil. It was contaminated decades ago by uranium production in St. Louis County near Lambert Airport.

The plan projected cost is $223 million dollars and would take eight years to accomplish. There will be a public hearing on the issue May 29th.

It's the latest step in trying to remove radioactive waste that dates to the building of the first atomic bombs.

The waste is the result of uranium processing at Mallinckrodt Chemical Works from 1942 through 1966.
