EU permits Monsanto's corn imports

By AP/KWMU

Brussels, Belgium – The European Union has okayed the import of a genetically modified corn product made by Monsanto.

The clearance Monday does not include the use of the product for human consumption or for cultivation.

It can only be used in animal feed.

The corn variety is called MON-863 and Monday's decision comes after the European Union failed to make a decision two months ago.

Under new rules, the commission has last-say authority to decide on clearing new biotech crops if member states reach a stalemate.

The new product is meant to resist corn rootworms.
