Whooping cough suspected in St. Louis Co district

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis County health officials say two probable cases of whooping cough have surfaced in a school district.

The Riverview Gardens school system says in a news release that the affected students include one from Highland Elementary and another from Central Middle School.

Superintendent Clive Coleman says parents have been notified.

Whooping cough is also known as pertussis. It's highly contagious and spread through the air by coughing.

All students are being encouraged to be up to date on their immunizations.

Coleman says the school system's nursing staff is reviewing students' vaccine records and requesting any children who have prolonged coughing see a doctor.
