The state of Missouri is not politically monolithic and St. Louis Public Radio is looking for a statehouse reporter who can tell stories explaining the nuances facing our state’s lawmakers and political influencers, with a commitment to diversity of sources, ideas and issues.
We are looking for a journalist who believes in the watchdog role of the press and who can translate complicated policy, regulation and legislation into compelling copy that explains how the legislature’s actions affect the daily lives of our audience.
A great candidate for this role will be able to provide thorough, thoughtful reporting while also focusing on analysis, enterprise, exposition. The statehouse reporter is excellent at connecting with well-placed sources and is able to see the big story lurking in the small details. Above all, we are looking for a statehouse reporter who is endlessly curious and thrives in exploring how government impacts the lives of everyone in the state.
The right person for this job will be able to file sound-rich, personality-driven stories for radio and file well-written, engaging stories for the web.
The statehouse reporter is based in Jefferson City during the legislative term, but can reside anywhere nearby and could do some reporting from our St. Louis office as well. While the statehouse reporter works for St. Louis Public Radio, the stories the reporter produces are generally of interest statewide and are shared with the other Missouri public radio stations.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, political science, history or the relevant equivalent experience is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three to five years experience in a newsroom.
- A sophisticated level of awareness and understanding of the issues facing Missouri state policy makers today. An understanding of tax/revenue policy, health policy, education or environmental policy would be a plus.
Radio reporting experience is preferred, but not required. A passion for audio storytelling is a must. The statehouse reporter can also expect to participate in our political podcast, Politically Speaking.
Salary Range: $52,000 - $60,000/annually
