New Exit Ramps Near Downtown Could be Done by Spring

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Missouri highway officials say new freeway ramps near downtown St. Louis will be completed a little later than expected.

Workers are building new ramps to connect Interstates 44 and 55 to the new Truman Parkway at Lafayette Street.

The project was supposed to be finished by the end of the year. But rainy weather means it probably won't be done until the spring.

MODOT engineer Don Wichern says once it is done, getting downtown will be much easier.

"The old ramps weren't laid out well," Wichern said. "They were put here and just never really connected well. It was really congested through here. You got to make a right and a left, and you got to pick which ramp. This will line them up, and it will be beautiful access."

Federal funds are paying for most of the $1.2 million project.

Tuesday Federal Highway Administrator Mary Peters toured the construction site.
