Durbin wants Guantanamo closed by year's end

Sen. Dick Durbin.
Sen. Dick Durbin.

By AP/KWMU

Washington, D.C. – Senator Dick Durbin said today the United States should immediately begin phasing out operations at its detention facilities on the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

The Illinois Democrat just returned from a fact-finding trip to the base.

Durbin says the goal should be to close the prison camp by the end of 2006.

He says despite the best efforts of American troops, Guantanamo has become a powerful, negative symbol around the world for failures of the Bush administration.
